f ; V l" .Si' V a if. , v Foreign Film Series r r r o - r- f r Bergman The Nebraska Union Foreion Films Series begins its 23rd season this week with one of the finest early films of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) was one of the first films that led to Bergman's eventual popular recognition as one of the world's giant film directors. Not in the traditional, dramatic Bergman vein, Smiles of a Summer Night is a satiracal comedy of sophisticated, upper class morals. It stars Bergman regulars Gunnar Bjornstrand and Harriet Andersson as two members of a group of socialites who spend a weekend at a country mansion participating in various amorous adven tures. The resulting film is a combination of acidulous wit and erotic illusion. Bergman himself was quoted assaying, "I perform conjuring tricks with a conjuring apparatus so expensive and so wonderful that any performer in history would have given anything to own or to make use of it." The film won the Grand Prix prize for comedy at the Cannes Film Festival. Showings are at 7 and 9:15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights in the Sheldon Gallery Auditorium.
