He said the main purpose of the
MAAA is to bring "great art events to
. Mid western cities and universities at
prices the public and students can
afford. Without MAAA support, ticket
pricesv'to'f r professional " performances
would be much higher, he said.
"There Is a heavy subsidy to all these
(professional) performers that are
brought in with the auspices of the
Alliance," Varnersaid.
Professional artists would also make
three-day residences on campus con
ducting workshops In addition to
" perfofrnirtg, Varner said. Students
would - benefit by talking to the
' ' performers, he said.
; . Cdntnbtltioris' to MAAA from busi
nessmen, foundations, the National
Endowment for the Arts and individual
, state arts councils also help support
regional professional artists like the St.
Louis Symphony Orchestra and the
Omaha Ballet Company.
Varner said' MAAA members' want to
develop and support more Midwestern
professional performers than there are
at present. ; . :
varner said he did not think Nebraska
va a cultural wasteland, but said the
Midwest has been bypassed by major
professional artists in favor of the East
and West Coasts. -
"Most communities in Nebraska have
very agressiveiy created their own arts
organizations, but we v have failed to
' bring In major national and international
artists;" he said.
Varner's duties as board chairman are
to preside over meetings and counsel
the executive branch of the board, he
said. I he MAAA comprises a 24-mem-ber
board of directors and 50-member
advisory panels from each of the four
states. In addition, tho four governors'
wives are honorary board members.
