Classes smaiier, no varie in 1874-75 (By Lynn Silhasek ' You thought you had it rough in those classes that were bursting at the seams with enrollments over 100 students. , Classrooms at UNL during a different '74-75 school year 1874-75 were sparsely pop ulated, according to a student roster in the 1874 University of Nebraska Register and Catalogue. The Register is part of the holdings of the University of the Nebraska Archives in Love Library. though the sparse enrollment is due probably to the fact that UNL was only five years old at that time, the titles on the classes offered then, don't sound as if they would generate much student Interest. Mulligan's Structure of the English Language, Latin, Greek, Perspective Drawing and Meteor ology were requirements then, not elcctives. according to the caia-; jlogue. . Classes in what was then the College of Literature, Sciences and Art were grouped into four areas of study or "majors". "The Class ical, the Scientific, the Latin Scientific and the Greek Scien tific," the catalogue showed. Study in the College of Agricul ture was divided into two pro grams, the , two-year "short course" and the four-year "agri cultural course". . School at both colleges was divided into three semesters and was tuition-free. A student's schedule for a semester, as out lined in the catalogue, usually included a language course (Greek, Latin or German), a mathematics ; course, a science or history course and rhetoricals. ; Before students could enroll at ; the college, they were advised to j complete at least partially the ; requirements of the UNL Latin School. . ! To enroll in this school, a student had to be at least 14 years old and ; able to give "satisfactory evidence of good moral character," the cataloaue indicated. So while the j 'long waiting lines, incomplete schedules and oversized classes, jthe present registration process brings might cause some dissatis faction, students now can at least remake entire schedules with the drop and add process. And' wouldn't you rather do that ; than study Cicero? E5i im 1 V (6iWiJifcMV J0 Appi!CJon C'CulaiO' locofpufHa University Bookstore Lower Level Nebraska Union RSUN BOOK EXCHANGE INFO.
