the' College of Arts and Sciences.
The School of Life Sciences was created by the
NU Board of Regents last July and began
functioning as an administrative unit of the
university in January.
Consisting of faculty from the former Depart
ments of Botany, Microbiology and Zoology in the
College of Arts and Sciences and Biochemistry and
Nutrition in the College of Agriculture, the new
school was created in response to changes which
have occurred in the subject matter of biological
studies, Meints said. . ... ,
Meints said the symposium's main topic will be
consideration 'of the , basic factors controlling
growth and development in plants and animais.
Of special interest to students will be a public
lecture by Dr. M. Neal Macintrye of Case Western
University In Cleveland, Ohio at 8 p.m. Oct. 14, In
thd Nebraska Center Auditorium, he said.
Macintyre's. talk, entitled "Curious Chromo
somes, Congenital Catastrophies and Constructive
Counseling," will focus .on developments in
genetic counseling allowing prediction of birth
defects before birth takes place.
Among the speakers will be Dr. J.B. Gurdon of
thq MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology,
Cambridge, England; Dr. Olaf Gamborg of the
Prairie Regional Laboratory, Saskatoon, Saskatch
ewan, Canada; and Dr. Abraham Marcus of the
Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia.
Other speakers will be Dr. H. 0. Halverson of
the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Science Research
Center, Waltham, Mass.; Dr. John Law of the
Department of Biochemistry at the University of
Chicago, and Dr. D. D. Sabatini of the Department
of Cell Biology at New York University.
'And we're receiving tremendous support
people will becoming from all over the country,"
he'said. It is very infrequent that we are able to get
the top 13 people in our field to come to Nebraska,
it might happen regularly at Harvard, but not
here. Twenty years may elapse before any
symposium of this nature is held again."
