I By Connie Sue Gaskiil ONL's School of Life Sciences will hold an inaugural symposium featuring formal scientific presentations, a public lecture and informal workshops at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education of East Campus, Oct. 14-16, Dr. Russe! H. Meints, chairman of the Symposium Commit- fir4 "Ti moro The symposium, which will deal with "Control Mechanisms (in Development,": commemorates thefcrea'tion of ;the School of Life Sciences within the' College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Life Sciences was created by the NU Board of Regents last July and began functioning as an administrative unit of the university in January. Consisting of faculty from the former Depart ments of Botany, Microbiology and Zoology in the College of Arts and Sciences and Biochemistry and Nutrition in the College of Agriculture, the new school was created in response to changes which have occurred in the subject matter of biological studies, Meints said. . ... , Meints said the symposium's main topic will be consideration 'of the , basic factors controlling growth and development in plants and animais. Of special interest to students will be a public lecture by Dr. M. Neal Macintrye of Case Western University In Cleveland, Ohio at 8 p.m. Oct. 14, In thd Nebraska Center Auditorium, he said. Macintyre's. talk, entitled "Curious Chromo somes, Congenital Catastrophies and Constructive Counseling," will focus .on developments in genetic counseling allowing prediction of birth defects before birth takes place. Among the speakers will be Dr. J.B. Gurdon of thq MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, Cambridge, England; Dr. Olaf Gamborg of the Prairie Regional Laboratory, Saskatoon, Saskatch ewan, Canada; and Dr. Abraham Marcus of the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia. Other speakers will be Dr. H. 0. Halverson of the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Science Research Center, Waltham, Mass.; Dr. John Law of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Chicago, and Dr. D. D. Sabatini of the Department of Cell Biology at New York University. 'And we're receiving tremendous support people will becoming from all over the country," he'said.
