Osborne to make shift By Larry Stunkel ' Player injuries have caused UNL football Coach Tom Osborne to make another personnel shift as the Huskers move closer to their opening game with Oregon University Sept. 14, Senior Rich Bane, last year's starting wingback, saw action at both wingback and split end with sophomore Bobby Thomas during Monday's practice while senior Don Westbrook, who worked at both wingback and l-back positions last week, has been scheduled primarily for duty at wingback. The adjustment came after Osborne declared junior split end Dave Shamblin, who started some games last season at that position, out for the season with a knee injury he suffered in Saturday's scrimmage. Listed on the depth charts Monday at first team were Thomas at split end and Bane and Westbrook at wingback. Which of the three will play at what position depends on how well they play this week In practice, Osborne said. . . :.v '; -v - Monday was Bahe's first practice since he suffered a pulled muscle last week. Osborne said that Bahe doesn't seem to be bothered by the injury and seems to be full speed. ' j i i But for the moment, Thomas is the first team split end, Osborne said. i Thomas, who has been compared to past Husker great Johnny Rodgers, has speed, good manuver ability and quickness but he lacks experience and isn't as big of target with his 5 ft. 8 in. frame as Shamblin was at 6 ft. 3 in., the coach said. Osborne expressed satisfaction with Thomas' performance so far this fall and said Thomas is ready to fill the position.; ; : Osborne also expressed confidence in sophomore Chuck Malito after his scrimmage last Saturday .j "We need people to make the big play," Osborne said. "Shamblin was a deep threat as well as a good short yardage receiver. He still could be the finest split :end we've ever had." : ? Osborne said , he isn't planning any change in his offensive strategy even though he said he might throw more quick screens with Thomas playing.
