.. , I cm see this is going to be
another one of those summers
when I end up going to the
performances at Howell again
and again and again. Four

ances. David Bell's production of
"Cohan is a Grand Old Name"
opened Friday at Howell
Theater. This play is worth
seeing if only for the reason of
watching Dave Landis, who
does a superb job as the young
Cohan.
There's much mors to this
, play than fine performances by
the cast, however. It is .very
refreshing to see a production
on Cohan that doesn't present

him as a patriotic, sentimental,
genius who just had everything
fall in place for him.
Bell, who wrote and directed
the play, has written a much
more realistic portrait of Cohan
as a man who achieved success
at great expense to himself and
those involved with him.
Bell's play has many flashes
of originality and insight, and
flows along easily for the most
part. There are times when the
pace slows, and it threatens to
become dull but these spots are
mainly confined to comments
by the older Cohan to his wife..
Bell would have a more
fascinating play if he cut out
some of the nostalgic comment,
especially in the first act and at
the start of the second, because
these are the only times the .
audience begins to lose interest.

All in all, however, this play
presents a believable portrayal
of Cohan, and is an entertaining
but serious play, with plenty of
excellent dance and song scenes
for the audience.
The excellent' technical inno
vations of Jerry Lewis also
serve to enhance this pro
duction. It is a play well worth
seeing.

regretted
The Summer Nebraskan
regrets an error made in the
last issue of the paper. In
this issue it was stated that
David Bell had directed
"Dark of the Moon" last
year. He was not the
director, but an actor and
the choreographer. The
director was Hal Floyd.
