aids women

Take heart, Joanie -Caucus,
you're not alone.
Although few are runaway
housewives like the "Doones
bury" comic strip character
who lives in a commune,
awaiting acceptance from law
school, many women are, like
Ms. Caucus, returning to
college after long absences.
They return for a variety of
reasons. Some want to finish
degrees. Some have time on
their hands, with the young
ones having flown from the
nest. Some come for the
enrichment. Some never before
had the chance to attend.
Hut with larger campuses,
longer registration lines, and
classmates the age of their
children, many women are
with school, like Ms. Caucus
who can't find a college that will
accept her as a student.
At UN L, the Nebraska
Alumni Association is helping
women "get over the scaries of
coming back to school," accord
ing to Carol Reno, director of
alumni relations.
The Association sponsored
Saturday a back-to-school
workshop for women returning
to finish college at UN L. Ms,
Reno, the workshop's coordin
ator, said its two fold purpose
was to identify campus re
sources for women, and to
establish for them a peer group
where they can meet and
discuss their common problems.
According to a pre-workshop
estimate by Ms. Reno, 65
women were expected to

However, he said at that
time, he was still fighting the
battle, and an investigator was
sent to Lincoln to determine his
fitness to handle a gun.
Matthews said that the investi
gator questioned both his
psychiatrist and his old USDA
employer. Both, he said, told
him the investigator seemed
preconvinced to find him
mentally and emotionally unfit
to handle a gun. Both told him,
he said, that the investigator
asked leading questions about
any strange behavior he might
have had.
Different Job
Matthews after appealing his
firing, was hired by the post
office, where he remains today.
He said that taking the post
office job jeopardized his legal
suit against the government,
because he suffered little
monetary damage. Continuing
the suit, he said, would no
longer benefit him, although it
might be of help to others.
Although his case is still with
NCLU, because he found
another job, his case is no
longer strong, even though he
was fired discriminately.
He said .that due to the
stigma of having been mentally
ill, -"I received the sm tyna of
treatment as Eagletoti did."
(Eagleton was ousted from his
position as vice presidential
nominee under George
McGovern, when it was re
vealed he had had shock
treatments.)
. Gail Lockard, social worker
at the Lincoln Lancaster
Mental Health Clinic, said that
. if apatient is turned away from
a job because of past mental
history his legal rights prob
ably are being violated.
System Frightening
"But the big system scares
often fight-court battles," she
said.
"Or they react to discrimin
ation feeling everyone is that
way, and they give up and
refuse to look for other
employment. -
"Sometimes they've been so
beaten down that they just
don't feel like fighting," she
said.
