Fgftfs and Study may offer 1975 South American charter By Scott Svoboda Students who have dreamed of - visiting Europe or traveling to some exotic Asian port, but thought it was like an epilog to "The Impossible Dream" need dream no longer. More than 500 students, staff and faculty at UNL have traveled to other countries this year under the auspices of the Flights and Study Tours Office. More are planning future trips, according to Cheryl Long, assistant director of that office. She noted that Flights and Study Tours Office works with the University Extension Division in arranging charters and study tours. So far, all charters and study flights have been to Europe. "This year we had two charters in winter and one is planned this spring," she said. "In 1975, we plan to charter a trip to Peru and Ecuador." The South American trip would be sponsored by the University Extension Division, Latin American Studies and Flights and Study Tours Office, she said. Although no exact price has been set, Long expects a savings of between 30 and 40 (over commercial fare) for the trip, a savings offered with all study flights and tours. ' "The program saves a lot of people money," Long said. "For example, the full commercial round trip fare from Lincoln to London would run over $800, and to compare this to the spring University Charter Flight fare of $287, demonstrates the savings available through the chatter program." Long mentioned three upcoming flight plans a student could use. She said the winter program will include a 2-package fare, or take credit courses through University Extension. "In spring things will be different," she said. include such and hotel "Plans are not firm yet, but a third offering is being formulated for a flight with a land package without course credits. The land package would arranoements as food accommodations a discount. Commenting on" an area travel-study conference she attended in Minneapolis, Long said she was impressed by how UNL's program compared with other schools'. "There were more schools with long-range study programs, but none with as much variety as our short-term study programs," she said. Long said another purpose of tho conference was to explore possible regional cooperation in charter flights. "A definite priority for this office and the conference is to offer a two or three month summer charter to Europe for students in 1975," she said. She said all parties concerned were working hard for this joint effort and things look promising. She said the South American trip is just one program being looked at, while tours to Asia also are being considered, according to the demands for these places. Long said the charter flights are open to all UNL students, faculty and staff members and their immediate families.- "If a student's permanent address is still with his parents," Long said, "then his parents are eligible for the flight as long as the student participates." ' She said registration for winter flights will begin when the fall semester begins, but she will place names on a mailing list for people interested before that. Registration for the South American trip will be later, she added, but interested persons can contact the Flights and Study Tours Office in Nebraska Union 204.
