UNO
election
apptjaieu
A UNO "Watergate" may
leave that campus without a
newly elected student body
government this fall, according
to Student Body Vica
President Kristen Grady .
Charges of voter
harrassment, excessive
campaign expenditures and
poll workers being too close to
voting places have caused one
UNO election to be thrown out
and , the second also to be
contested, Grady said at a
Student Advisory Board
meeting with the regents.
She said Greg Blodig, as
president, and Marsha
Babcock, as vice president,
were elected in March 3
elections to head the UNO
student government. Two of
the losing slates appealed to
the UNO Election Commission.
Blodig also appealed and
won. The two slates then took
their charges to the student
court with Blodig appealing the
court's decision to disqualify
his slate.
The court voted against
Blodig's appeal, threw out the
election results and ordered
new elections. Those were held
Thursday and Friday, but
ballots were impounded before
they could be counted, at the
request of UNO's Council on
Student Affairs (CSA). CSA is
similar to UNL's Council on
Student Life.
CSA made the request to
the UNO chancellor because it
questioned whether the
student court legally could call
for new elections.
Grady said that, according
to. UNO,'?.- student hbody
constitution, senators are to be
elected two weeks after officer
elections. UNO has 2 weeks
of school left.
If both elections are
declared invalid, there will not
be the necessary two weeks
between officer and senator
elections, Grady said.
She noted that if it is too
late to elect senators, this
year's government would
continue as the government
next fall.
