Of the 21,160 students registered in September, 18,741 were Nebraska natives. Each county in Nebraska was represented, while Lancaster Couniy, wliich i.-ciudc; Lincoln, hs1 tha most students, registered with 6,243. Douglas County, which includes Omaha, was second with 2,804 students. There were 1,953 out of state students who enrolled, representing nearly ell of the nation's states, according to Bob Reid, assistant to the director of Academic Services. The largest number of these students came from towa (233), followed by South Dakota (15S) and IKinois (128). This percentage of out of state students is quite low compared with other state institutions of this size, Reid said, because UNL does not actively recruit students from the other states. "The attitude of the Legislature is that we should not subsidize out of state students until we can adequately take care of our own," Reid said. The out of state tuition rates do not nearly cover the expenses of the education these students receive, he noted. Out of state students at UNL pay $48.25 for each credit hour. There are 480 foreign students from about 0 countries attending UNL. Hong Kong has the largest number (130) with India next (41). , The high number of Hong Kong students at UNL is because five years ago they were able to enroll at UNL at a point one year earlier in their education than was permitted at other American institutions, Levitov said. Another appealing factor was that UNL tuition rates were less than at most other colleges, he noted. Foreign students pay out of state tuition here. '.' The enrollment of Hong Kong students at UNL is diminishing some, however, because many other American colleges also have lowered their educational entrance requirement by one year, Levitov explained. Another reason is that NU's tuition rates have increased until " they are not much lower than many other schools, he said.
