'Personal parish1 serves campus uamo

The Catholic Student Center at St.
Thomas Aquinas church is a "personal
parish," according to Father Leonard
Kalin, director of the center.
Kalin explained the difference,
between his parish and a "territorial
parish," in which Catholics in a
designated neighborhood attend the
church in their area.
"A persona! parish is designated by
the Church for certain people' he
said. "All Catholic college students in
Lincoln belong to St. Thomas
Aquinas. They are responsible to this
parish and we, in turn, are responsible
to them."
That responsibility covers a large
area at the Catholic Student Center. In
addition to daily masses and
confession times, classes in
Catholicism, Bible study, music and
dancing, the center offers social and
community action activities to . suit
many tastes.
Social programs include roller
skating, dances, movies, trips to the
country and impromptu gatherings.
Three charitable work groups also
are sponsored by St. Thomas Aquinas,
as well as folk choirs and an annual
public brunch.
: Kalin spoke with enthusiasm about
the students who attend the church.
"I'm very proud of the kids bere,"
he ssid. "They have a real beauty and
simplicity about them, anr their
commitment is strong."
He gave as an example several
students who devote time each week
to periods of meditation and prayer
with the Adoration Sisters of the Holy
Spirit, a contemplative order of nuns
in Lincoln.
"And they work very hard to make
the programs here work," Kalin
continued. "For instance; the work
that goes into the brunch each year is
done almost entirely by students."
He displayed a photo album filled
with snapshots taken during the year,
including some from last year's
brunch, which had a Roman theme.
The 1974 event, which was held
last Sunday, was based on a Romper
Room theme. About 800 people were
served.
"It's tremendous community public
relations," Kalin said.
Much of the work the priest is
involved in at the center is based on
individual personal counseling.
"In fact," he said, "I'd say
counseling is a primary function of our
ministry here."
Kalins said the church should focus
on a close relationship with the
spiritual development of the
individual.
"We're cheating people if we give
them sociology instead of religion," he
said.
He said there is "a definite increase
of renewed interest in spiritual areas"
among students today.
"Curiosity about the institutional
church has replaced the arrogance that
was there a few years ago," he said. ,
"It's a worldwide phenomenon, but it
is becoming most dramatic on the
college campuses.
"It may be uue, ni part, to
unanswered questions and world
tensions," he said, "but it is happening
too fast to simply be part of a societal
transition."
Kalin said there has been some
movement of lately back to traditional
aspects of the Catholic church such as
the Latin liturgy and Gregorian chant.
He recalled with amusement a
young priest who, at a recent
convention, declared that incense was
the new "In" thing at mass.
"He thought it was very avant
garde," Kalin , said. (The burning of
incense during mass is a traditional
Catholic ritual.) . v '
Kalin was serious, however, when
he spoke of what he saw as an ever
present need for change and growth in
the organized church.
"The future of the church, of
religion-indeed, of the world-lies in
the kids. They offer so much with
which to work. They are a precious
commodity," he said.
