Ki L 432-Ot daily nebraskan Researcher to discuss the psychic By Dennis Ellermeier P s y - c h o - k i n- e-sis (sy.ko.ki.ne.sis) N. (from Gr. psyche, mind or soul Gr. kinsin, to move) Psychokinesis or "mind over matter," is the ability to influence behavior of physical objects by mind processes alone; for example, moving a pencil across a table without touching it. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the phenomenon exists. Gertrude Schmeidler will speak in the Nebraska Union Tuesday at 3 p.m. on "Mind over Matter: Psychokinesis in the Laboratory." Schmeidler, professor of psychology at City College of the City University of New York, has been researching psychic phenomenon since tha late 1940s. While she has maintained an interest in several facets of parapsychology, most of her research and publications have dealt with extrasenso-, perception (ESP) and psychokinesis. While doing doctoral work at Harvard University, Schmeidler first became professionally interested in psychic phenomena. In 19G4 she was awarded the William McDougall Award for distinguished work in parapsychology. She has twice served as jpi 'psident of the N a t ionaf ' Parapsy chological ' Assoc. When asked in an interview published in Psychic magazine whether .:shc..,lvj the current mtwiJu- 4Ychic phenomena was faddish or something deeper, Schmeidler responded: "Well, I'm sute it's a fad and I think whether or not it will pass depends on how much solid work gets dune, it might sptit t forward because it's faddish, then build in and stay."' She went on to say: "Thirty years ago the major thrust was toward proving that there was sucti a thing as ESP. And.it seems to me that we are well post that stage." Schmeidler also will participate in an informal discussion session Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Neihardt Residential Center. She will be joined by Prof. Donald Jensen, of the UML Psychology Dept. Jensen said he has been interested in parapsychology for some time but added, "I'm pretty skeptical about it." Schmeidler's visit to Lincoln is sponsored by the Nebraska Union Talks and Topics Committee (Human Potentials subcommittee) and the Department of Psychology. r IS w f -,-.- V TP V Monday and 9:30 a.m. - Scholarship!
