But that's what the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found in a red, football shaped lollipop called a Cornhusker. an FDA officer told a UNL Julia Hewgley, consumer affairs officer for the FDA in Omaha, lectured on the duties of the FDA to a consumers problems class Friday. The first line of consumer protection begins with the manufacturer, she said. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA then enforce laws to protect the legitimate businessmen and the consumer. Surprise visits by FDA officials to commercial food services help insure high quality food, Hewgley said. If the product is not safe or does not consist of the ingredients that the producer says it does, the lab findings could be used as evidence in court litigation. The most important problem the FDA is concerned with is checking for microbiological eontsminstfon in food that could cause illness said Hewgley. "Most of the time, we catch a problem before it comes out on the shelves." If not, the FDA goes to the media to inform consumers. The problem of proper nutrition is the second area of concentration by the FDA. Hewgley said that people don't have enough money, knowledge or interest in good nutrition, which has led to a lot of confusion about nutrition.
