The rating was given by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP). Ratings are Ail-American, First Class, Second Class and Third Class. The Daily Nebraskan had received an All-American rating for the three previous semesters. Other journalism honors to UNL students were awarded this weekend at the regional conference in Des Moines of The Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. In the Mark of Excellence competition, Michael "O.J." Nelson, last semester's Daily Nebraskan editor, won first place for best editorial writing. Meg Merchant won first place for th best editorial writing, Meg Merchant won first place for the best television reporting and David Ahrendts, Karen Lauber and Steve Stamp won for best radio reporting.
