', may leave something to be desired, according to the results of a
', survey done by the Council on Student Life (CSL) and the UNI.

'.-Seventy-eight of 508 foreign students at UNL responded to a
' questionnaire mailed last semester to each foreign student.
Forty-nine of the students said American students are friendly.
"Twenty-one said American students discriminate against
foreigners. Peter Levitov, a foreign student counselor, said he
doesn't think foreign students blame American students for.
feeling the way they do. They consider it a natural result of their
upbringing to be wary of strangers, he said.
Sixty-one of the students said American students did not
: know about the foreign students' country or culture.
r' Forty -two said their experience in Lincoln has been affected
byf inanc!al problems, especially rising tuition and the increasing
cost of living.
. Twenty-four calied their out-of-classroom experience
inadequate.
The Foreign Student Office provides personal counseling for
foreign students. He said foreign students have problems when
communication has not been effective, such as explaining
questions about immigration laws or campus regulations.
, New foreign students on campus must report to the Foreign
Student Office. The office keeps a record of the student's
address, phone, and academic status. '
"That scares them," Levitov said. Everything is confidential,
but it may not seem so to the foreign students, he added. Many
people don't want to visit the Foreign Student Office because
they suspect the staff members are spies for the CIA, he said.
' ' A majority of the 78 who responded said they wanted campus
tours, help with registration and help locating housing. They also
indicated a need for help locating housing. They also indicated a
need for help with banking and with locating stores and
restaurants.
Program preferences were expressed by the students. An
interest in having Intercultural Communications workshops was
expressed by 55 of the students. One such workshop was
attended by 12 students last week. Levitov said there had been
- plans for it before the survey was taken, but the survey showed
that interest was high.
The idea of having an international lounge on campus was
' preferred by 58 of the students. Levitov said such a lounge would
enhance the quality of campus life for foreign students. It ideally
would be a building which would serve as a hostel, center for
entertainment and receptions, among other things. Since
budgeting does not allow for such a facility, Levitov said, there
should at least be a lounge. , . . , . x .
Levitov said international House is a good experience for those
who live tlwre, but that nonresidents feel they don't belong. They
dislike going to another person's residence, he said.
. ;.' "If attitudes (of American students) were broadened, it would
make foreign students more comfortable," Levitov said.
