STUDENT- FACULTY PLAN sPpeh DAY 6B(fmini!i:: I n T IE V a. U DdtllU. It's rock and roll in the purest' sense of the word, and the J. Geils Band will be here to play it arid sing it tonight at Pershing Auditorium. Rock critic John Swenson said it all when he said, "There are fortunately a few groups around who know how to , assimilate what went down before them without descending through witless mimicry into banality. One of the best bands at keeping alive the rock tradition by intelligently updating the basic patterns that have kept the music cooking has been the J. Geils Band." From its auspicious beginnings in the late 'GOs in Boston, where the group first amassed a loyal following, the band seemed destined for stardom. The band's burgeoning reputation is bolstered by every live concert it plays, since the group is dynamite in concert, according to their fans. Wide public acceptance has been the result of the critically acknowledged I v r r rvt l-v I rk mhJ a tf 14" - $SH f gr f f Uyi ICLIIIILX2 III 1UUC71 talents of the individual members of the band and a lot of hard work. A group's musical style depends on more than that, though, and in the case of members of the J. Geiis Band, the essential elements are their collective taste and an honest respect for their done wonek my hocsd musical roots. Much of this comes from lead singer Peter Wolf's devotion to the music of his youth: blues, rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Wolf has one of the most, complete record collections in the country, especially in the area of rhythm and blues from the '50s, and artists like the Drifters, La Verne Baker, the Clovers, Clyde McPhatter, Ray Charles and Otis Redding. Guitarist J. Geils is a complete musician rather than just another flashy lead guitarist. In fact, he often prefers to remain in the background, underpinning the dance rhythms with soul shuffle licks, licks. The excitement created on stage is further enhanced by Seth Justman's total command of the keyboards, and Magic Dick plays a blazing mouth harp. Bass chores are handled by Danny Klein and the rhythmic drive is supplied by Stephen Bladd on drums. The concert, which will also feature Jo Jo Gunne, starts at -8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Union South Desk, Brandeis, . the Daisy and the Pershing Auditorium Box Office. to perform The Brass Choir and Brass Ensemble will play in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday night.
