    Nonbusiness majors target
of summer business class
A course dealing with "a side of the world Arts and Sciences
and Teachers College students usually aren't exposed to" will be
offered the first summer session at UNL.
The course, "Business As A Social Science," is aimed at
helping nonbusiness majors understand "what business people are
up to," according to John Scholz, University Studies director.
Ths -credit hour ccursa, which wi!J be taught by Associate
Prof, of Marketing John Prasch, will go beyond the basic level of
business ami get into en intensive introduction to business as it is
a bureaucratic environment, Scholz said.
"Almost every job available to college, graduates is connected
with business in some way," he said.
According to Brasch, the course will cover the major problems
and issues which face the manager-administrator. Such problem
areas include organizational behavior, advertising ethics, new
product development, tax avoidance, hiring, promotion and
discipline of employes and price setting.
"Business As A Social Science 395, is open to 10-15 persons
and will be taught from 9:00 to 11:50 a.m. Monday through
Friday. Formal lectures and informal discussions based on reading
will be held in the classroom. About one-half of the course will
follow a "field work" approach where students and faculty visit
individuals and organizations that exemplify the material being
studied. A research paper will also be required.
The course is directed particularly towards scientists and those
in social services and will attempt to get across a "basic idea of
business functioning and a good understanding of what makes
businesses tick," Brasch said.
Economics courses, which are required for some Arts and
Sciences and Teachers College degrees, describe how economic
systems operate, but don't go into how real business
organizations operate, he said.
"A person must deal with the bureaucratic-business
environment all his life, regardless of occupation," reads a course
outline. "Neither the teacher, nor the scientist, nor the doctor,
nor even the unemployed can escape."
