HEMES ' SHE LOVES TO MAKE FRIENDS... AND HUS3ANDS... tanf-garde classic, 'Ubu Roi,' egan as schoolboy prank -p-isi- am . I r 11 J' By Dennis Ellermeier , A 19th century classic of avant-garde theater Ubu Roi, opens tonight at the Studio Theater. Ubu Roi was written in the late 1800s by Alfred Jarry before he was 20. Begun as a schoolboy's prank, Ubu Roi has amused and insulted audiences since its production in 189S. It was this piay that made Jarry an originator of the avant-garde theater and art movement. The Studio Theater production is directed by drama student Donavon Diez. "We're using a cartoon motif," said Diez, "but using it to point up the absurdity of the kind of incompetent authorities we all come in contact with." Diez said such themes were especially relevant today. The story line is similar to that of a fairy tale but the content is adult, It is a study of authoritarianism and corruption society in the late 1800s. in French The kingship of Poland is usurped by Pere Ubu and his wife Mere Ubu. Ubu institutes a reign of terror but is finally challenged and defeated by the son of the assassinated king. Pere Ubu is played by Roger Johnson. D. Chetly Kraft plays his wife. The other 10 actors play anything from a 1-man Polish army to a cannon. '. The action will occur in and around the audience. Diez warns that the show may be a little rowdy. Ubu Roi plays today through Monday at 8 p.m. in the Temple Bidg. Studio Theater. Admission is $1.50.
