Union to
increase
ooa price
Although one Nebraska
Union official contends "We
don't want to increase prices,"
he explained this week that
"the way food prices have gone
up, putting some of the
expense on the students is
unavoidable.
Food prices in tha Union
will increase Tuesday,
according to Bob Richeson,
food service manager.
"It appears right now that
all prices on food items will
increase," he said.
Although wholesale prices
have risen steadily all year, this
price increase will be the
Union's first since last August.
The price of bsef is
responsible for the largest
increase in expenses, Richeson
said. The cost of ground beef
has increased by 20 end beef
round (roast) close to 50 in
the last year.
Ham prices have increased
by about 70.
Dairy and poultry product
prices also are rising.
Cheese has gone up 60,
and milk prices have stabilized
after a 9 increase. Egg prices,
although stable now, have
increased 85.
Despite an increase in flour
prices by n-'? tu-n 100, the
Union'f tn - i c:i i : $ he' -'.ing
steady. Richeson explained this
was because of an annual bid
on bread. He has no Idea how
much the Union will have to
bid for bread next year. ;
"Everything has m up. A
little item like swet plctdet
has gone up 58 eJone' h
said.
Not all of the increasing
expenses can be blamed on
food prices. Freight cost and
wage increases are other costly
increases.
A new surtax causes
everything shipped In by truck
to be higher, Richeson said.
A 14.5 wage Increase for
full-time employes last July
and a 9.3 increase in was$
for pert time help in November
also have caused annual
expenses to rise.
