V" ' " V' V" V V r V' V' V V Support unit aids cardiac victims Crossword Puzzle By Charles Johnson A middle-aged fan, fortified with a few pre-game drinks, climbs the Memorial Stadium steps to his scat and cheers the Big Red on to another victory. Suddently, due to the excitement and unaccustomed stress, he collapses. At this point, the Nebraska Life Support Unit rushes into action. As an ambulance team arrives with a stretcher and oxygen, the Red Cross workers administer basic life support, which includes mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiac compression. The stretcher is carried down to the track and wheeled to the northwest corner of the stadium. Once there, the Mobile Heart Team takes over and gives whatever aid is needed. The patient should start breathing after an electric shock treatment, if all goes well. The Nebraska Life Support Unit is a voluntary unit on duty at all home football games to provide emergency cardiopulmonary care. Dr. Samuel Fuenning, University Health Center Director, coordinates the entire effort through the health center. The unit's purpose is to provide emergency care for anyone who is ill or injured, but it is specifically designed for people who experience heart trouble, according to Dr. Fuenning. The unit has succeeded well in stopping deaths due to heart failure during football games. In the eight years of its operation, 1 1 out of 12 people who collapsed because of heart attacks or strokes have been resuscitated, according to Dr. Stephen Carveth, director of unit personnel on duty at the stadium. Eight to 10 people visit it each game for first aid, according to Carveth. They may be suffering from minor cuts or headaches. The Life Support Unit looks after three to five people a game who have fainted for a variety of causes. Carveth said about one person every two games is treated for a heart or lung emergency. Based on the average of one cardiopulmonary collapse per 120,000 fans at UNL games, Carveth estimated that 150-175 people develop a cardiopulmonary emergency at university games around the country each season. ' - He said 400,000 people die each year in the United States due to a sudden heart stoppage outside a hospital. "Our 1 1 c Jt of 12 average of resuscitation is very good," Carveth said. Although the Student Health Center coordinates the unit, it is a community effort. Carveth, a Lincoln heart surgeon, Dr. Herb Reese or Dr. Robert Buchman is on duty at each game to head the operation. Involved in the Life Support Unit are the Red Cross, Lincoln Mobile Heart Unit, Bryan Hospital Cardiovascular Unit, Boy Scouts, Lincoln Police Dept. and the health center staff. Since everything is voluntary, the only expense to the University of Nebraska is $1,182 worth of complimentary tickets for the personnel each season. All equipment is loaned each fall by Bryan Memorial Hospital.
