Orchard Haritane (Channel 12, 9:20 p.m. tonight) is like many other movies-except the combatants are fruits and vegetables and they fight on a kitchen cabinet. Produced by UNL students Mike Brown and Jim Furrer, the 25-minute animation deals with a war that breaks out between fruits and vegetables in the town of Orchard. Since completion a year ago, the film has been shown at Sheldon Art Gallery, the Lincoln Cooper Plaza Theaters, KOLN-KGIN and as part of the Nebraska Union Weekend Film Committee series. It was entered in the Chicago International Film Festival and placed "somewhere in the top 10 for student-produced animations" in this year's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences competitions. Brown said. According to Brown, the idea for the film was first conceived more than two years ago. Financing was provided by the American Film Institute, Cooper Theaters Enterprises, the Nebraska Arts Council, KOLN-TV, the Nebraska Student Union Program Council and by interested individuals, Brown said. "Money is always the problem for the beginning filmmaker," he said. 'The trick is to make your film look like it costs more that what it did. I think we did that with Orchard Heritage." Filming was done on weekends over a 6-month period at UNL's Henzlik Hall and in the Brown home. Working with Brown were Jim Furrer, who built sets and designed facial expressions for the characters, and David Leavitt who helped with t script. ' . .. . . The illusion of moving and talking fruits and vegetables was achieved by painstakingly positioning the character, filming it briefly then moving it slightly for the next shot. "I think we spent about an hour on each second filmed." Brown said. "Sometimes we would take as much as three hours per second." He said the interesting thing about animation is that "the diiector also serves as the actor." j J The film is a satire intended to show the results of "not viewing other people's positions in the proper perspective," Brown said. "A lot of people view the battle scene and say if s about the Vietnam War, but it's larger than that," he said. "Conflict is a trait of humans. It will always be here because mankind is generally selfish and afraid of his neighbors." Although successful, the film has had side effects that Brown said almost defeated his purpose. "I made it to show what I can do, and now when I mention (making) another film people always ask if it's going to be animated," he said. "I've become known as the 'fruit and vegetable man'. I'd rather be known as a director or philosopher." Not one to rest on his laurels, Brown has another film "in the can." This one deals with a World War II setting, he said. "People see Orchard Heritage and say 'Yes, but can he do anything else?'" Brown said, "That's what I'm trying to prove."
