The drugs Evensen said he has tested
include lozenges for sore throats, Darvon (a
pain killer) and diuretics, which increase the
discharge of urine.
Evensen once was selected to undergo
Phase I testing. He said he didn't have any
side effects but one of the other subjects lost
control of his muscles. His neck muscles
tightened, and he couldn't a!k.
Ron Harris would not comment on this
case, saying that names and specifics of
experiments are confidential. However,
Harris repeated that subjects are informed of
possible side effects if they are known.
"Anyone who needs the money should
try the experiments," he said. Pay ranges
from $10 for experiments not requiring a
stay at the laboratory to $200 for a series of
three weekend tests.
Miller also is participating in these
studies, but it's the first time for him.
Miller said he is involved in a 3-weekend
bioavailability study to test the effects of an
entibiotic.
Doctors told the group of 21 that
migraine headaches and upset stomachs
could be side effects of the drug.
"I had a slight headache for about four
hours, but I got used to it. It was nothing
really severe," Miller said. Doctors treated
subjects who suffered these symptoms, he
said.
Money was one thing that enticed Miller '
to do the study, he said, but it was not the
only reason. Another was to "have a good
time" and be able to experience the study.
It's also a good t:me to get studying done, he
said.
Miller is being paid more than $300, an
unusually high amount, he said.
Miller said he signed a statement saying
he was at least 1 9 years old, but "you don't
have to sign anything that released Harris
Laboratories from liability in case of an
accident."
