"Our general philosophy has been to try to get more student input (in college issues)," said Arts and Sciences Advisory Board Chairman Scott Cooper. 'That's the only way we're going to alleviate their- (academic) problems." Arts and Sciences board members put up posters on campus this semester, asking students for written suggestions or complaints on any aspect of the college. According to board member Bernie Wirth, 30 to 40 students have responded. The responses were answered by board members and involved a variety of issues, Wirth said. Members advised those students complaining about instructors or courses to talk to college department chairpersons about the problem, he said. Students faced with the Arts and Sciences language requirement will have several options to choose from when registering this fall, Cooper said. These include three 5-credit-hour culture-based courses and an introductory language course with three other semesters of a foreign language, Cooper said. Arts and Sciences Board members will staff an advising center for students with undeclared majors during preregistration, he said. The center, begun last year, was used by about 200 students for counseling on a college major, Wirth said. ,iiv wi rtt i vv till Council on Student Life task force to institute the use of computer terminals in the class registration process, he said. Board members also are considering ' a proposal to increase the number of hours a student may register passfail, he said. The current number is 24 hours over four years. To accommodate more student opinion, membership on the Teachers College advisory board was increased last fall, according to Jan Baumgartner, board chairwoman. Twenty students, members of teacher organizations in the college, joined the 8-member board as associate members, she said. The additional members act as voting representatives on each major Teachers College faculty committee,, she said. Fall schedules changes for Teachers College freshmen include two experimental sections in a beginning educational course, Baumgartner said. Board members will help establish course objectives, which invoive teaching students to use university resources, she said. Freshmen at the College of Agriculture will register this fall for an additional communications course as part of their basic requirements, according to Jim Deuel, board chairman. The decision results from a study conducted by the college's advisory board curriculum committee.
