of stipends
dependent
on ranking
If a student receives an upperclass Regents scholarship it
does not necessarily mean the scholarship will be renewed
the next year if the student's grade point average (GPA)
improves, according to Ron Fritz, UNL assistant director of
scholarships and financial aid.
All UNL students have percentile rankings computed
within their class in their college. The Scholarships and
Financial Aids Office ranks by percentiles those students
applying for the upperclass Regents scholarships.
Scholarships then are awarded to those students having
the highest percentile rankings; regardless of their college.
In a class of 100 students in a particular college, the
student with the fifth highest GPA would have a percentile
ranking of 95. In a class of 200, the student with the
seventh highest grade point average would have a percentile
ranking of 96. Although the first student might have a
higher grade point average, the second has a higher
percentile ranking.
For example, Fritz said, the GPAs of students in the
college of Engineering may not be as high as those students
in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The engineering students are as qualified academically,
but because of the course demands, they have more
difficulty earning a high GPA, he said. ,

75,000 square-foot Union, and
so far, the Union's size hasn't
been reduced because of
inflation, according to
Swanson.
"If any undue delays occur
between now and the contract
bidding time," he said, "then
we may begin to inch out of
the $3 million figure." That
may mean building a smaller
Union or using lower quality
building materials, Swanson
said.
It depends on how quickly
the committee and . the
architect can agree on
preliminary plans and convert
them to working drawings for
bidding, Swanson said.
Construction will start in
October 1974 instead of the
earlier proposed date of July
1974, because acceptance of
the preliminary drawings by
the committee is behind
schedule, he said.
The new Union should be
finished by March 1976, but
probably will not open until
September 1976 because of
inactivity on campus during
summer.
The East Campus Union will
include staff offices, meeting
rooms, student affairs and
organization offices, food
service, catering and snack bar
services and the Food and
Nutrition Dept. laboratoiy.
