'' v. V ' p tf " - .a. -4 Hiif Remodeling for handicapped Steps are a struggle for some physically handicapped students, but UNL maintenance officials also face an upward climb. They are working, within a decreased budget, t make classroom buildtnqs more accessible to physically handicapped students. A legislative bill introduced this session would require state, county and city financed construction and remodeling of buildings begun during or after January 1975 to include features that Ellow the physically handicapped to enter and move around in buildings more easily. Jhe hill, if passed, would require additional features to bo installed in public places. Included would be telephones that can be . reached by a person in a wheelchair, raised letters or numbers along building halls to indicate a room's location for the blind and both visual and audible warning signals, for instance, for fires. According to Ron Wright, UNL Assistant director of business and finance, University policy has always provided for installation of these features. Special installations at UNL include entrance ramps, curb cuts, parking for motorized vehicles used by handicapped persons, elevators and widened restroom stairs, said Jam? Muitey, Physical Plant special maintenance director. Major class areas are accessible to physically handicapped students, Wright said. But according to a 1969 study of City Campus and East Campus buildings by a Home Economics Dept. honorary society, 63 per cent of City Campus buildings are inaccessible to handicapped students, whi!e 79 per cent of East Campus buildings are inaccessible. Installation of features for the handicapped on all buildings listed by the study as not accessible would cost $17 to $2 million, Wright said. ' Legislative budget cuts during the past three years have sliced the UNL physical plant budget almost in half-to $550,000, he said. No campus buildings are scheduled for remodeling or for installation of features for the handicapped until 1975, he added. These buildings include the Coliseum, the Law College and the Foods and Nutrition Bldg. Crossword Puzzle ACROSS 1. Kind of note 5. Swab 8. Flatfishes 12. Hebrew measure 13. Harem room 14. Die 15.
