Different Woman 's odyssey
explores feelings on liberation
A Different Woman, by Jane Howard
The number of new books being written by
women is becoming so great that Newsweek
called it a revolution.
Joining this minor renaissance is Jane
Howard with her second book, A Different
Woman. Her first book, Please Touch: A
Guided Tour of th Human Potential
Movement, was published in 1970.

A Different Woman is based on Howard's
Odys'eus-like travels in an attempt to discover
what women in America were saying about
liberation. The method is not new (recall John
Steinbeck's Travels With Charley), but it can be
effective.
Highlights include such important chapters
as the one on Ken Kesey, (author of One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and some passages
which come close to being poetry: "I love to
. read my paper in the morning. Some days I
read the Lost and Found notices. Poodle, ans.
to "Coco." Pearl bracelet, vie. 37th & Mad.

by my wife."
Regardless of the opinions around her,
Howard maintains a certain aloofness. By the
end of the book this provokes the reader's
curiosity about Howard's own views on the
feminist movement. Finally she tells us: "I'm a
sympathizer, a femsymp if you will, but some
feminists come on so abrasive they alarm even
me. Some of these zealots remind me of
Pentecostal Christians who grab your elbcw and
stare you down and demand, "Do you know
the Lord?" . . . Pentecostal ism fervor happens
not to be my style, nor does evangelical
"feminism. (But) I think our cause is
important."

The Joffrey Ballet, regarded as one of America's finest
ballet companies, will perform at 8 p.m. tonight and
Saturday at Pershing Auditorium. A few tickets are still
available at the Pershing box office for tonight's
performance, but Saturday's performance is sold out.
Since its inception in 1956, the Joffrey has been known
for its youthful vitality. Dances have been choreographed
by Gerald Arpino, Jose Limon, Leohide Massine, Jerome
Bobbin' tof West - Side' Story iame) ' and Sir Frederick
Ashton.
The company's performances in Lincoln are sponsored
by the University of Nebraska and the National Bank of
Commerce.
