HE BEAST The aim of our film program is to provide our audiences with a pleasant balance of entertainment and education. Focus your attention upon our screen and you will experience the art of film at its best. Our Spring Semester Program is divided into five parts: the PIONEERS OF MODERN PAINTING series, a Documentary Series, the Shakespeare Film Series, the Film-makers' Showcase series and a Feature Classics Series. Unless it is noted otherwise, there will be three shows each day-at 3, 7 & 9 p.m.-and admission will be $1.25. PIONEERS OF MODERN PAINTING On Sunday and Tuesday afternoons at 3 o'clock we will be featuring Kenneth Clark's newest film series, PIONEERS OF MODERN PAINTING. In this series of six films, Lord Clark traces the lives and masterpieces of Paul Ce?anne, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Henri Rousseau and Georges Seurat. Each film is 40 minutes long and there will be no admission charge. DOCUMENTARY FILM SERIES The Documentary Film Series will be small but very good this semester. The Series will feature three films: PAINTERS PAINTING (1972); SUNSEED (1973); and GERTRUDE STEIN: WHEN THIS YOU SEE, REMEMBER ME. (1970). Emile de Antonio's PAINTERS PAINTING is a two-hour feature on New York painting. The film features the art of and interviews with painters such as Willem De Kooning, Helen Frankentahaler, Hans Hofmann, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, Andy Worhol and many others. SUNSEED by Fredrick Cohn is about the emergence of a varied and major spiritual movement in the United States which, the film-makers says, is a phenomenon without real precedent in our history. SUNSEED is the first feature film which provides a fascinating overview to the many approaches that are available to the spiritual teachings and wisdom of the East. The film features ten respected spiritual teachers: Swamt Muktananda, Yogi Bhajan, Lama Anagarika Govinda, Sri Bhaqavan, Maharaii Virsa Singh, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Swami Satchidananda, Baba Ram Dass, Murshid Samuel L. Lewis and Rabbi Shlomo Carlcbach. GERTRUDE STEIN: WHEN THIS YOU SEE, REMEMBER ME is a study of Gertrude Stein's years in Paris, from 1905 to the mid Thirties, examining some of the most exciting years of her career. The film, produced and directed by Perry Miller Adato, contains discussions about Miss Stein by sculptor Jacgues Lipshitz, writer Janet Planner, composer Virgil Thompson, writer Joseph Barry and art dealer Daniel Henri Kahnweiler. It includes the written recollections of Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson and Alice B. Toklas. SHAKESPEARE FILM SERIES The Shakespeare Film Series will feature two very outstanding films never before shown in Lincoln. The first will be Peter Brook's version of KING LEAR (1970) starring Paul Scofield in perhaps his most highly acclaimed performance ever. The second will be the Russian HAMLET (1966) directed by Grigory Kozintsev. FILM-MAKERS SHOWCASE A very special part of the Sheldon Film Tehater's Spring Semester Program will be our Film-makers' Showcase presentations featuring two documentary film-makers, Lionel Rogosin and Frederick Wiseman, Mr. Rogosin will be in Lincoln on Wednesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 14. During his visit, the Theater will feature three of Mr. Rogosin's films: COME BACK, AFRICA; GOOD TIMES, WONDERFUL TIMES; and ON THE BOWERY. Each day's program will consist of three film showings-at 3, 7 & 9 p.m.-and a discussion session with Mr. Rogosin in the evenings. Mr. Wiseman will be appearing in the Theater on Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12. During the week of his visit, the Theater will show five of his films beginning with LAW AND ORDER on Tuesday, April 9; then HIGH SCHOOL on Wednesday, April 10; HOSPITAL on Thursday, April 11; ESSENE on Friday, April 12; and ending with his latest film, JUVENILE COURT on Saturday, April 13. Each of these films will be shown twice a day -Bt 3 and 7 p.m. Mr. Wiseman will introduce the films at the seven o'clock showings of HOSPITAL and ESSENE on Thursday and Friday and a discussion session will follow. Wiseman's films deal with public, tax-supported institutions: a state hospital for the criminally insane, a police deportment, a high school, a city hospital and the courts. Through his films we seo government at its point of direct impact, revealing the immensity of the problems and the quality of response. Wiseman makes ethnographic films turned inward: cultural investigations for a society that takes few stops between the offices and the suburbs. The film showings in this semester's Filrrvmakor's showcase presentations are co-sponsored by the Union Special Films Committee. FEATURE CLASSICS SERIES The Feature Classics series is the continuation of the idea started last year by the Chaplin series. The Spring Program will not focus on one artist's work, but rather will feature many different film-makers, actors and actresses. Each weekend you will have the chance to view one or two films by an important artist from the film world. These films will give you not only the chance for some good entertainment, but an opportunity to see an important event in the history of cinema. The featured artists will bo: Luis Bunuel, D. W. Griffith, Jean Cocteau, Josef von Sternberg, F. W. Murnau, Miklos Jancso, Frank Capra, Akira Kurosawa, Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Strick, Pier Paolo Pasolini and John Ford. HI.
