Language courses given flexibility New courses planned for the 1974 fall semester shoulcTX yive Mris ana sciences students more TiexiDiiity in meeting language requirements, according to Joan Wadlow, assistant dean of Arts and Sciences. The courses result from language requirement changes approved by the faculty in December. The changes, effective in September 1974, provided for courses that are designed to meet students' interests as well as group requirements, Wadlow said. One of the changes will allow students to use Modern Languages 100 to Dartiallv fulfill lanauaoe The new three hour course will be taught in English through the English Dept. Wadlow said the course will be general and geared toward "showing students the importance of language study." Students taking Modern Language 100 then would need only three additional semesters of language. A student now must complete the fourth semester college course in a language. A sequence of three five-hour courses also will be offered starting in the fall to fulfill French, German and Spanish requirements. Wadlow said the courses would emphasize the culture and civilization of countries in which the language is spoken. According to Wadlow, the new requirements will also dllow students with a high score on language placement exams to receive fourth semester language credit. Wadlow said the changes' main purpose was to "provide students with opportunities they didn't have before." According to Wadlow, the revised requirements will apply to any Arts and Sciences student. She emphasized, however, that students must adopt all 1974 group requirements to take advantage of the new language requirements. Donald Allison, Modern Languages and Literatures Dept. chairman, said he supports the requirement changes and believes they will give students "a different angle and emphasis" for their studies. Allison said his department now is organizing the new courses. More information will be available when nlan arP completed.
