appealed first to the Eighth
Circuit Court of Appeals in St.
Louis and then to the Supreme
Court
Last week, the court let the
lower court decision stand with
only one dissenter, Justice
William 0. Douglas.
Urhom held in a decision
almost a year ago that the
University's collection and use
of student fees does not violate
the Constitution.
UML student Richard Vctfd
had argued t li a t his
constitutional rights were
viola ted, hy use of fees to pay
for student government,
newspapers and speakers.
Veed had said that the
University, in effect, was
supporting the political
philosophies thus expressed.
Uut Jutk(j Urlxjm said he
found no evidence that the
University had assumed the
tele of advocate for any
philosophy othei than an
educational one which assumes
that the education of students
extendi lx;yond the classroom.
