Over 60 representatives from low-income
community groups and local agencies met with
the Legal Aid Society last week to evaluate the
society's current operation and plan for the
maximum use of its resources to serve the
low-income community.
Representatives of Legal Aid Society clients
and city and county offices also participated in
the two-day planning session at the Lincoln
Center Bldg.
The purpose of the planning session was to
identify the most urgent needs of Lancaster
County's low-income population. Since the
society faces cutbacks in personnel as well as
financial resources, participants tried to
establish a set of priorities to deal best with the
most pressing problems.
Seeking out additional funding sources was
identified by the group as a first objective, in
order to expand its services to more low-income

The group listed housing problems as the
next most critical area. It was concerned with
the shortage of decent low-cost housing for the
low-income.
Welfare reform, consumer protection,
juvenile law and school issues were the
remaining top priorities of the group.
Acting director David Piester said many
legal aid groups have been criticized for not
fulfilling the community's needs, and the
planning session was held to prevent that
situation from developing here.
Piester also said the use of trained
para-professionals could help stretch limited
financial resources.
"We are grateful to all of those persons and
agencies who chose to assist us in this
endeavor," he said. "We are now working cn
putting their views into action."
