    Air Force
intensifies
recruiting
of women
Jobs for women in the
military are most numerous in
the Air Force, according to
Col. Bobbie Bobbin, director
ot women in the Air Force,
In Air Pulse, a weekly
publication of Offutt Air Force
Base, Bobbin said there are
literally hundreds of jobs
qualified women can perform
in the Air Force.
She emphasized that jobs
a e not I i m i ted to
administration, personnel,
medical specialties and other
areas traditionally filled by
women. Technical jobs in such
nelds as ma in tend nee,
engineering, computer ! science ,
weather, space systems and
comrnunications-plectronics
also are available, she said.
She said the Air Force plans
to inciease the current strength
of more than 16,000 women to
44,500 by 1978.
An equal rights amendment
to the Constitution is being
considered. "If ratified by the
states, this amendment could
have considerable impact on
women in the armed forces,"
she said, "not only in terms of
numbers, but also in the
standards of selection, the
kinds of jobs they will hold
and whether they should
attend the service academies "
The major question raised
by the amendment is whether
women should be used as
combatants.
"By law, women lino
officers and enlisted women
may not be assigned to aircraft
crews engaged in combat,"
Bobbin said. "The Air Force
does not have limited-duty
flying personnel-that is,
personnel on flying duty who
arc not qualified to fly in
combat."
"Efforts are l4ng made to
ffcru'tt more women as
dentists, doctois, optometrists
and biomedical scientists," !he
said.
