Craig Eckhardt, associate professor of chemistry, will have his findings summarised in an upcoming ed;lion of the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. Excitons are localized electronic excitations activated by the introduction of certain tight wavelengths. Untii several years ago, they were thought to be only a solid state occurrence. In the mid' 60s, scientists discovered they a 'so were observable in atomic liquids, To observe the excitons, Eckhardt used an instrument called a specular reflection spectrometer, which he designed and constructed himself. Such a spectrometer is available; only at UNL. Eckhardts's data also has been published in several other scientific journals.
