Corea alters style;

Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy Chick Corea.
This album is a manifestation of the new direction taken
by Chick Corea and his group Return to Forever since the
departure of Airto Moreira and Flora Purim.
The group has added an excellent guitarist, Bill Connors,
and they are producing music that should appeal to jazz as
well as rock fans. The compositions and arrangement lean
toward a Weather Report or Mahavishnu Orchestra style.
Each piece on the album somehow seems to be a fluid
extension of the previous cut with the exception of Captain
Senor Mouse, which stands out only because I have heard
Corea do it before with Gary Burton. They treatment of it
here is excellent.
Other than Senor Mouse, comment on individual cuts is
difficult; each is a composite of good, solid music and faultless
execution. However, comment on the members of the group
might be in order.
Bill Connors, a', I said, is an excellent guitarist. His playing
is striking and innovative and he definitely lends impetus to
the group.
Stan Clar ke on bass is, as usual, exciting. Clarke is only 21
or 22, and a talent like his at that age is certainly prodigious.
He does not seem to take his usual free-thinking approach on
this new release, but it cannot be denied that his molding to
Corea's style hasn't hurt him at all.
Lenny White? is a solid drummer, but his talents do not
supply the imaginative force needed in the music the group is
doing now.
Corea on keyboard is a virtuoso. Nothing more need be
said about him.
The album is good, even exciting. Return to Forever's
concepts are interesting to follow; one wonders if they will
ever end their experimenting in differen areas and stick witn
one.
