Ilatt ha IS I By Dianne Barry When UNL's buildings were designed, no one was concerned much with an energy crisis. The goal then was to keep the buildings at an even 70 degrees summer and winter, according to Ray Coffee, cost analyst in the business and finance department. "Now we'll have some variations. Classrooms may be chilly in the morning until the lights and a class of 40 students or so can heat the room themselves," he said. Coffee said the university has foreseen this problem of fuel shortage. Since UNL does not have a storage capacity large enough to take the campus through the winter, he said, fuel has to be delivered. Only one bidder this year said he would be able to deliver fuel and he indicated that there was no guarantee, Coffee said. The bidder was a distributor who only could supply the fuel if he got it hirnsdf, he added. The problem in heating the UNL buildings is that each building has its own unique system of handling the steam that is piped in, Coffee said. "For example, in Morrill Hall the steam runs through radiators. In others the steam may reheat a water system which heats the radiators," he said. ' He said that in Hamilton Hall, the air that is circulated is fresh air, but in the older Administration Building, the air taken in from the outside can be adjusted. "You can then adjust the temperature or reheating of the water to, say, 10 degrees lower to get down to 68 degrees," Coffee said, Coffee said the engineers and control people are working on a trial and error basis to save fuel through heat adjustments and reductions, he said. The second Jviig to In; checked is that the Physical Plant is operating its efficiently as possible by qolt'nq the maximum value out of the steam being used fo' heat, he said. Coffee said UNL Chancellor James Zumberge will appoint a committee to study the best ways to alleviate the energy crisis. Extra days considered The UNL Office of the Chancellor is corisiuVn inq lengthening the winter interim to save heating fuel, acconJifj to John Stephens, executive assistant to Chancellor James Zumberge. Stephens said the longer interim period is one of many alternatives being di:,ajv.ed. but no decision h.3s Ix-en m.-rie yet on the matter. While interim might be extended, Thanksgiving vacation definitely will not be, he said. He added that rumor, of a lengtheru-d vacation ;tre unsubstantiated. Wednesday, novemter 14, 19.';
