Junior transfer student Dale Yamamoto has oiqani?ed tho
University of Nebraska Judo Club.
Yamamoto, the son of a judo instructoi, received judo's
most distinguished awaid-the black belt, at age 17.
Many people think judo is an ancient Japanese art,
however, it is less than a century old. The spoit was
formulated from jujitsu techniques by Jigoro Kano in 1882.
Judo has spread throughout the entire world and now is
included in the Olympic Games.
I teach the sport of judo, intended only for the pleasure of
my students, however, with my training one should be able to
defend himself as a last resort," Yamamoto said.
"Judo consists of various throws and chokes, it is actually
more defense than anything else," he said.
Membership, open to both male and female, costs $5 a
month. "Of my current 20 students, eight are females,"
Yamamoto said.
"I will take new students at any time, all one must do is
come to a club meeting and I'll get him or her started," he
said.
Yamamoto, having had only Japanese instructors, tries to
conduct his classes in the same manner as he was taught,
complete with Japanese commands.
