Bell has placed the mainstream of action within the tt ucture of an oracle. The methodic indirection, the art of poetic description evoked by tin- liieek cfiorus is replaced by evocative chants, conjuring visions forward through time in cinematic t pisodes. 0 u t ioiv.,;r..i I it;l ill' ll,: f in ally I'lnptincs' ir !i, v. his Uii-y in in i n t i iti a ( J I t" ! ill, ,h.ii,ii;ti ! , trvvjijhts arc constantly projected a, ;h( oracle unfolds each episode is l,y a moaning, expectant chorus; and vt- att1 left with modern theatric ; i;ct!t wrote and directed the play, h. is in contemporary fashion, ; j: thamselves to the audience in MiMuuuy. Betty Diez's cool, methodic Clytaemo:;tta, j Agamemnon's wife, is successful. The i enormously complex character's subtext w; s j sometimes unclear, partially because the broken j blow of events does not seem to allow the synapses of motivational tension to fire close enough to one another to maintain believable context. Judy Zimmerman, although engagingly lovely as Cassandra, was without fire in quiet moments and uncontrolled in the pasrionate throws of her vision. Her final speech brought a resolving impetus to her character, however. Jerry Howman's Agamemnon lacked depth and believability at some crucial moments. Similarly, Steve Shelley as Orestes, Agamemnon's son, and Jim Sudik as Aegisthus grow with their roles, but lack the subtlety and variety in readings and portrayals which diminishes their possibilities for character development. Becci Dawson's visually-striking Pythia was undermined by a sameness of pitch level an i lack of variety in inflection. Theoe sarin' problems were indicative of the chorus's voc .i work. Technically, the show is fine. More ch uiiy defined light areas would be desirable, an i some subtler aspects of the set's function. qualities seemed lacking. But Sandy Moeller's textured back pain e hinting of ancient markings-eroded but mil powerful and stern-set the production's i o,' beautifully. Dan Stratman's effective lui'i:. , design complements this. The newly-renovated, intimate ifo J o theatre was built to encompass il.e extraordinary ambitions of young wiit'ie directors, technicians, and actors. Birth .e provides ample evidence that its success a:; effective facility is complete. David BelTs ambitious, innovative play breaks new giou ai for UNL and Lincoln. He and his cast and cu.-vi' are to be thanked.
