New forestry lab to expand research Tree research in Nebraska will "greatly expand" as a result of UNL's new $680,000 Forestry Sciences Laboratory, according to U.S. Sen. Carl T. Curtis, who spoke at the laboratory's opening Friday. Curtis, the ranking minority member on the Agriculture Committee and the forestry subcommittee, said trees are important because they help reduce topsoil losses, while providing food and shelter for farm animals. "Food vitality is important to people across the world. This means there's a need to modify the ravages caused by the natural elements to protect agricultural products," he said. James Zumberge, UNL chancellor, said planting trees in appropriate places can help piotect watersheds from wind erosion. "In Nebraska we bring in trees to enhance agricultural production," he said. Congressman Charles Thone, a member of the forestry subcommittee, said trees absorb carbon dioxide and help control noise pollution. The : no more appropriate place in the world than Nebraska to establish a forestry laboratory, he said. "Nebraska is the planter state and home of Arbor Day," he said. Curtis said persons living in Nebraska appreciate trees more than other people living because "they must strive in order to have trees." He said the Nebraska National Forest is the only manmade forest in North America. John McGuire, chief of Nebraska's Forest Service, said UNL's research will concentrate on studying tree diseases in Nebraska and on developing better knowledge on ways trees can be used to increase agricultural production. "Nebraska's climate can be severe to some trees. Unfamiliar diseases, insects and soils lacking the necessary moisture or nutrients are reasons why some trees are unsuccessfully planted here," he said. McGuire said the new laboratory will help determine what trees can survive in the state's climate. The laboratory consists of two buildings. The main building has 10 offices, four specialized laboratories and a library to OCOlC ret soiiuMliinji for rcrv)iir Cornhusker Co-op Residents! Receive 10 off any item for 1 week.
