have to be another time for doing it," he said. Hegener said he believes that in many respects football is analogous to his class work. "If I fall behind in a class, that class is lost. By the same token, if I get hurt and miss much practice, I could get lost in the shuffle, since Nebraska has so much depth." "As a freshman, I was helped tremendously with the study hall arranged by the football team," he said. After studying little in high school, it helped him acquire some of the necessary study habits required in college, he said. "Many football players come to the university just to play football, I came to get an education. School isn't secondary on my list of priorities," he said. "Being redshirted, retaining a year of my athletic eligibility, helped me greatly." he said. In addition to learning more about husker football it also has given him an extra free year of education. As a result, he has been able to take fewer hours each semester than those trying to graduate in four years, leaving him more time for studying. "I entertain no notions of playing professional football; I realize my capabilities," he said. Married in July to the former Pamela Coatman, Hegener hopes someday to live in Colorado where he can enjoy the outdoors. If anything, being married has helped my studying.
