Persons who are young, female and highly educated are more likely to see, report and believe in UFOs, said Leo Sprinkle during the second address of the Human Potentials Series Thursday. Sprinkle, director of counseling at the University of Wyoming said, "If there is intelligent life on earth, then perhaps there is intelligent life elsewhere." He said the impetus for his extensive personal research came from two sightings he had during his student days. The most spectacular occurred in 1956, when he and his wife were returning to Boulder, Colo. Sprinkle described a luminous, hovering disc and said that his own study of UFOs began after that event. Several explanations for UFOs are given, he said. The object may be natural phenomenon, such as an unusual star, or the sighter may be imagining the object or experiencing hallucinations, he said. Other alternatives are that the objects may be secret military weapons or devices, the reported sighting is simply fraudulent or the object is a spacecraft from another planet, he added. "Each of these may explain some of the sightings, but none of these explain them all," Sprinkle said. Discernable patterns have emerged in UFO sightings, he said. Most occur at night, in rural areas and on weekends. Several have been seen over mountains, military installations and power lines and other sources of electrical energy. Sprinkle has traced the historical progression of types of UFOs sighted. Clusters of circular glowing objects, triangular-shaped contraptions and bell, crescent, and cigar-shaped "ships" have been reported. Only about 10 per cent of all UFO sightings are reported, Sprinkle said. He said many people have not given accounts because they fear ridicule. He added, "I can't say that I blame them." People who have sighted UFOs exhibit the normal characteristics of their age, sex and occupations, he said, "According to case studies, most of these persons do not show psy chopathological characteristics which would account for their claims of sighting UFOs," Sprinkle said. "Hypnosis and detailed case studies may shed some light eventually, especially in cases of 'contact' between the viewer and the UFO." Persons in every country in the world except China have reported sighting some UFOs, Sprinkle said. A 1971 Gallup Poll indicated that most world leaders believed life existed on other planets, he said. The incidence of UFO reports increases every 2G months, he said. One guess is that this occurrence coincides with the proximity of Mars to the Earth during those periods, he said. The next such time is in March and April 1974. friday, September 28, 1973 V! 8 daily nebraskan
