' ' ' - t ri Union Board: ASUN power over new fees group too large foQi'y nebroskon By Rebecca Ross Charging that ASUN will have a disproportionate voice in the makeup of the Programs and Fee Allocation Board, the Nebraska Union Board Thursday voted to send only one nominee to ASUN as its representative. Mary Cannon, Union Board president, said Ann Henry, ASUN president, had asked her to submit the names of two board members to ASUN for approval. Cannon said she sees a conflict of interest, since the Fee Allocation Board will review requests by student organizations and offices for their share of student fees, and ASUN will have the final voice in who gets on the board. "I am concerned about the fact that the real nomination power rests with ASUN," Cannon said. "ASUN is one of the organizations which gets a big chunk of student fees." According to Fee Allocation Board recommendations, ASUN is to appoint five persons to the 12-member board, one each from ASUN, Union Board, Publications Committee, University Health Center Advisory Committee and the Recreation and Intramurals Department. ASUN, Henry said, will review the nominations of these five groups and either approve or reject them. Cannon said she believes that the major fee users ought to have more to say in the selection of these five persons. "I'm not saying ASUN has any evil intentions." she said, "but I can't see this system working very well. It seems to place a disproportionate amount of power with ASUN." However, Mark Hoeger, ASUN first vice president, said ASUN, in asking for two nominees, is trying to make the selection of board members as open asjxssible. Cannon objected to the request by ASUN for two nominees. "It appears to me," Cannon said, "that by sending two names, ASUN will pick the person they want on the board." Cannon called the Fee Allocation Board "the most important board you could be a member of," and said the Union Board ought to have more power in determining who speaks for it. Hoeger quoted Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ken Bader as saying he hopes ASUN and the other organizations wouldn't select five persons who would only make a case for their own group, but five persons with broader perspectives. Hoeger said he doesn't see any "under the table deals" with the system. But Cannon said she believes the system implies "under the table deals." The Union Board voted to send a single nomination, board member Dave Morrison, to ASUN. Henry said if ASUN feels Morrison is unqualified from their point of view, they will ask the Union Board to name a new nominee. "We feel that the Union Board is competent to make selections and that is why we asked you for your nominations," Henry said.
