Arts fair
to include
puppeteer,
Arts and crafts, music and dance underly a demonstration
fair this weekend at Clinton School, east of 27 and Holdrege
Streets.
Dead Man's Runn, Lincoln cultural education group, is
sponsoring the opening.
The program begins at 7 p.m. Friday with a puppet show by
nationally known puppeteer George Latshaw. He will continue
to perform during the main exhibit, which is open to the
public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 6
p.m. Sunday.
t"Y- r l " ! - r Activities will include portrait painting by Julie Haskell and
UolClQllS Pottery making by Carolyn Hadsell, both UNL students, and
creative candlemaking by Jim Healey, UNL English Instructor.
Artwork will be for sale.
A religious rock group will perform, and local Latvian
dancers also are featured. Puppet shows will charge admission,
but the rest of the fair is free.
The point of all this activity is art education, particularly for
low-income children. Dead Man's Runn aims to form arts and
crafts workshops.
"If you have a talented child and don't have any pennies, the
talent all goes down the drain," said Carol McShane, member
of Dead Man's Runn.
She said, the group wants to remedy this situation, by hiring
professional artists for high caliber art instruction, which will
be free for those who can't afford it.
"We want low-income children to have a chance to spend 20
minutes a week with a professional artist,'-' she said.
With finances from a local committee and with indepenr ; ;t
contributions and sales, Dead Man's Runn can incorporate to
form what McShane called "an underground cultural school."
The classes would be accessible by bus, for Lincolniies unable
to drive.
The first children's program will be a "creative corner" in the
Saturday and Sunday grand opening. Children will be provided
with cardboard and paints to make whatever they want.
Artists and craftsmen interested in demonstrating their skills
during the opening ate welcome, McShane said. To arrange
space they should call her at 466-4815 before 6 p.m., or Sami
Wehrmeister at 475-9834 after 6 p.m. The group needs a
woodcarver, McShane said.
Dead Man's Runn is named for a creek running through
north Lincoln, she said, and the name expresses the hope that
a flow of cultural education can reach Lincoln's low-income
community. ,
