Luck sidelined; knee in splint By Bill Bennett Webster's Dictionary defines the word luck as "having good fortune or success." But after three knee operations, sophomore quarterback Terry Luck's football career at Nebraska doesn't fit the definition. Luck, 6 ft. 3 in. and 215 lbs., was the starting quarterback on the undefeated 1971 Husker freshmen team. During that year, the Fayetteville, N.C., native completed 31 of G1 passes and rushed for 120 yards He also handled the kicking duties. As spring football approached in 1972, Luck was expected to battle Dave Humm for the starting quarterback position. Gut on the first day of spring practice, his right knee gave way. Medically, Luck had what is known as a hyperextended knee. Surgery followed two and one-half weeks later, and he spent the summer trying to get the knee ready for fall football. But when he reported for fall practices the knee still wasn't right. "I didn't hurt it again," Luck said. "It just never got well. Every time I'd work out on it the knee would get sore, and I'd have to have it drained." The coaches told Luck that lie could make all the trips for the 1972 season, but that he wouldn't be used unless he was needed. Eventually, he was redshirted. In January 1973 Luck's knee was operated on again. The knee still was not responding, so after spring practice, which he also missed, the knee was operated on for a third time. The entire lining of the knee was removed. Luck worked this summer as a sports counselor and stayed off his knee as much as possible. He reported back to Lincoln on July 8 for knee therapy twice a day. "But after three weeks of therapy, I could only bend my knee to a 90-degree angle, and we knew something else had to be done," he said. Luck entered a hospital where the knee was forcibly bent "The doctors kept working on the knee, and it did get better," he said. "Then one day it swelled up, and they drained blood from it." He then was sent to a specialist in Oklahoma City where he was told to keep the knee in a cast for six weeks. "After two and one-half weeks the cast was temoved, and my leg was placed in a straight leg splint," tic said. "I also take 14 pills a day and try to rest." The knee still is in the splint. "My knee feels better now than it has in a long time," he said. the specialist told Luck to sit out this year, but he doesn't know if he can. "i hate sitting around and doing nothing," he said. "If eveiything works out all right, mjybe I'll be ready by the end of the season. I've even asked Coach (Tom) Osborne if I can hold lot extra points." D.:,iite all the operations and the pain, Luck retains a sense of humor. Being from North Carolina, he said about the upcoming game with North Carolina State, "We better beat them, because if they beat us, I'd never be able to go home again." 1 ban Lottery ticket appii.-a": mc for the student rnigi ;;;.n m the Missouri qarr-e w;U be next ;". ; I, I mi i : !1..'ll Monday through according to UML ticket manaoei J m !'
