At the University of Nebraska, she was probably just another student. Soon, however, the writing of Pulitzer Prize-winning Willa Cather will draw scholars and musicians to Nebraska from all over the world for a centennial festival in her honor during 1973-74. According to Robert Knoll, chairman of the Willa Cather Centennial Festival, the purpose is to "pay respect to one of the most distinguished graduates of the University of Nebraska and one of the foremost writers in the United States." First of the year's events is a UNL-sponsored international seminar on "The Art of Willa Cather," Oct. 25-28. Scholars from Japan, Italy, France, England, Canada, Australia and the U.S. will attend to evaluate the international significance of her work. Cather's books include 0 Pioneers, My Antonia, Pulitzer Prize-winning One of Ours, Death Comes to the Archbishop, and Shadows on the Rock. Another centennial activity is the publication of several books by and about Cather. . ,, The first, Uncle Valentine and Other Stories, contains previously uncollected short stories written from 1915 to 1929. It was edited by Bernice Slote, UNL English professor, and published by the University Press. Slote's Willa Cather: A Pictorial Memoir, a biographical sketch with photo essays, will be released in late December. Findings of the centennial seminar will be published next June in The Art of Willa Cather. A special performance on Cather's birthday, Dec. 7, will be given by world-renowned musicians Yehudi, Yaltah and Hephzibah Menuhin, personal friends of Cather, in Kimball Recital Hall. In March the UNL Orchestra and Chorus will tour Nebraska with performances that include readings of Cather's poetry to musical settings composed by UNL music Prof. Robert Beadell. jtt Special - daily nebraskan Wednesday, September 19, 1973
