All five student positions on UNL's Publications Board still
remain vacant, despite a 30-minute Council on Student Life
(CSL) discussion Thursday.
ASUN President and CSL member Ann Henry presented the
Council with names of five students ASUN recommends as
Publications Board appointees.
The board, composed of professional journalists, faculty
and student members is the legal publisher of The Daily
IMebraskan.
CSL tabled a vote to approve the five persons and requester
that ASUN submit eight nominees to it next week.
i he motion to table was made because "Pub Board
selections should be as nonpolitical as possible," according to
uL memoer bill i-reudenburg, author of the motion.
If eight students were nominated by ASUN, the Council,
instead of the student government, would have more authority
over which five should be selected to serve on the board, he
added.
However, another CSL member said he believed CSL had a
different motive for tabling membership approval.
One of five persons nominated by ASUN to serve on the
board was Sam Brower, last year's ASUN first vice president.
"The real question here is, 'Can Sam Brower, as a former
student government executive, serve on the Pub Board?'"
Council member Jack Goebel said. "By expanding the number
of ASUN nominations, you're just hiding from the real issue."
Discussing Brower's qualifications for serving on the Board,
CSL member Ann Pedersen said, I have no reservations about
Sam's ability or intelligence. I do have some doubt about a
former government officer serving on the Board.
"On the other hand, maybe that shouldn't limit
membership on the Board," she added. Pedersen, who
abstained on the vote to table, served on Pub Board after
serving a year as an ASUN senator.
The list of eight nominees to be submitted by ASUN next
week should include short biographies on each student,
according to Freudenburg's motion.
The discussion is part of a larger uncertainty about what the
relationship between ASUN and CSL is, according to CSL
Chairman Don Shaneyfelt. He cited problems that have come
up in determining which organization should appoint students
to various boards and committees.
"I thought the issue (of CSL-ASUN relationships) was
pretty much settled last spring," Shaneyfelt said, "but when
the new ASUN president (Ann Henry) began representing
AbUlM on the Council it was opened up again."

AUF: drive may be
'most successful'
After the increased participation by UNL students in the
1972 All University Fund (AUF), this year's drive from Sept.
24 to Oct. 22 is expected to be the most successful ever,
according to 1973 AUF officers.
AUF was established to protect University students from
continuous solicitations of charity organizations. The drive is a
concentrated annual effort to collect student donations and
distribute the funds to three organizations selected by the
students.
Receiving the funds will be one local, national, and
international charity organization.
Participation by the dorms increased from 1971 total
donations of $1,100 to a total of $2,100 in 1972. Kathy
Wingender, AUF officer, said AUF made $1,300 on a
dormitory fast alone. The dormitories had been asked to give
up one dinner meal. East Campus had 98 per cent
participation in the fast.
All women's dorms except one exceeded their goal, and
Harper exceeded their goal with money raised at an ice cream
eating contest.
