According to Marbach, the issue of student loan programs will be discussed by the State Investment Council at its October meeting. Marbach said his staff is studvinq the status of student loan programs in other states, but he said he is uncertain when the study will be presented to the council. The council directed his office to prepare the study last February. The council possibly could take action on renewing the loan program at its next meeting, he said. "However, I would hate to second guess what the group will do," he added. The council, which invests long- and shoit-term state and retirement funds, stopped investing in student loans because the loans have a high number of defaults, are subject to floating interest rates and offer no secondary market, Marbach said.
