1 r Cosell recounts climb to top Cosell by Howard Cosell. Playboy Press. 390 Daaes. Howard Cosell is probably the best-known sports broadcaster in the United States. Millions are acquainted with him from his Monday night football commentary on ABC-TV and from his famous interviews with Vince Lombardi, Jackie Robinson an of course, Muhammed Ali. Cosell 's autobiography begins at the 1972 Olympics in Munich telling of the Arab commando raid on the Israeli athletes. Cosell gives his personal opinions and reactions, not only about the murder of the Israelis in the raid, but also about the purposes and functions of the games themselves. Cosell then retreats to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and contrasts them with the 1972 games. After devoting some attention to Jackie Robinson and Vince Lombardi, Cosell finally returns to his childhood and begins his story, a Jewish boy growing up in Brooklyn. He tells of his father's sacrifices to send him to law school; and then of the successful law practice he forsook for broadcasting. Cosell writes of the people who helped him in earlier years and of those who didn't. He describes his constant fear of being fired and his struggle "up the corporate wall." Finally, Cosell comments on the past few years. He fills the pages with stories about himself and the people around him. Cosell writes the way he conducts his interviews tougn and to the point. He says who he likes and dislikes, and why. Cosell's acid wit spares none, including himself. funny papers bruce nelson Using his background in law, he explores issues such as Muhammed Ali's bout with the draft and Curt Flood's unsuccessful struggle against baseball's reserve clause (a clause that binds a player to his team forever unless he's traded or released). Cosell's support of these men and his criticisms of the sports establishment aren't mud-slinging. He offers constructive suggestions about how to change things. 'Cosell emerges from this book as a man of honesty and integrity, and most of all, as a man dedicated to his family. Cosell says his family is "what my life has been all about..." This book is one of the best written by a sports figuie. Whether one is a sports enthusiast or not, there is much in this book that readers will like. 3:30 p.m.-ASUN PACE-Union l.or t t. 1 1 - U.OU p. Ill. I 1'tll lit.
