Most critics of his work say he is one of the most talented filmmakers in experimental cinema. Myers is now in Lincoln with some of his award-winning films, which are part of the new Sheldon Film Theater Filmmaker's Showcase. Myers' films are radically contemporary and have been likened to Jean Luc Godard's in the intensity of their images. He has described his work as a "mythic cycle experience". "I see things around me fantasy style, surrealistic if you will, that I want to have in my movie," he said. "You see certain visual phenomena around you all the time, and I'm simply recording all the circuitry..." "I deal with ideas which aren't entertaining," he added, "but I hope to entertain in a different way, through good pictures, juxtaposition, images." Myers is a cinematography instructor at Kent State University in Ohio. He began work in films in 1961. He has won many awards, has had his films shown in international film festivals and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for filmmaking. diane wanek out of my head His films include Coronation, First Time Here, Everybody Knows Fay Wray, Akran and Deathstyles. The latter two have received major awards at the Ann Arbor Film Festival and also were included in the New American Filmmakers Series, sponsored by the Whitney Museum of American Art. Myers will be in Lincoln through Thursday and will lecture and present some of his films at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Thursday in the Sheldon Art gallery auditorium. He will hold discussions today at 10 am. at Centennial College and at 3:30 p.m. in the English department library. The Filmmakers Showcase is important because nowhere else in this area can people interested in films and filmmaking come in contact with experimental, independent filmmakers. In addition to Myers, the Filmmaker's Showcase has scheduled Frederic Wiseman, a documentary filmmaker, for a two-day visit in April. To correspond with Wiseman's visit, the showcase and the Nebraska Union Special Films Committee have scheduled five of his films, including Essene and Juvenile Court. The Sheldon Theater Filmmaker's Showcase also has made contact with Lionel Rogosin, Robert Frank, Suzan Pitt Kranning and John Cassavetes for future programs. jm.
