Manstedt
combincifiOBi
By Bob Hill
Teammates and fiiends call him
"Stead"; opposing coaches call him
"menace". The combination of these two
can lead to only one man -Nebraska's
senior defensive end, Steve Manstedt.
Nebraska is foi tunate it has the
talented All-American candida,te.
"Originally, I had planned to attend
Northern Colorado University. However,
a series of misunderstandings thought me
to Nebraska," he said.
Manstedt, born and raised in Wahoo,
admits he found UNL "a little frightening
his freshman year." Residing in a
dormitory, he developed "many of the
common fr?shman traits" including an
almost nonexistent social life and "the
habit of heading straight for home every
weekend."
"Recently I've been experiencing
difficulty sleeping nights," he said. He
added that his insomnia is perplexing
since he has "absolutely no worries
concerning the forthcoming season."
"This year's fall camp is by far the
hottest I've ever experienced.
Temperatures reach near 135 degrees
with no noticeable wind at all on that
Astroturf ," he said. "Some days you just
wish you had a gun and could end it all
right there."
The Huskers are more mentally
prepared for UCLA this year, Manstedt
said. This year the team knows what to
expect, and it will be ready, he said.
Manstedt said he has one goal for the
season: bringing the national
championship back home to Nebraska.
