PACE offers students two
options on statement
By Carol Speth
School of Journalism
Tuition statements for the
fall semester will have two
totals and the student will have
the option to pick the larger or
small amount due.
One total would include the
cost of tuition and student
feeswbjle, the seond total .
would include, tuition, fees and
a $3.50 contribution to PACE.
PACE (Program for Active
Committment to Education) is
a voluntary student
contribution agency to help
students with financial need
who do not qualify for other
grants or scholarships.
Ann Henry, ASUN
president, said she hopes the
new form will present a
student's options more clearly.
She said ASUN has applied
for computer priority to make
the change on the tuition
statement, which will cost
UNL about $1,400 the first
year. An extra line of printing
required to make the change
will take $300 from PACE
funds each year after that.
Calling the program a series
of frustrations from its
beginning more than two years
ago, John Ritchie, director of
scholarships and financial aids,
said PACE has been plagued by
problems with its collection
process.
The first year's
contributions came to $18,000
including a substantial amount
from outside sources.
The second year, a total a
student owed including PACE
wajs given i n the "amount djye"
box. Students not wishing to"
participate had to subtract
$3.50 from the total.
Contributions hit a high of
$31,000 that year.
But the form was criticized,
since many students paid the
extra $3.50 without knowing it
was optional.
The tuition form was
changed, so students had to
add $3.50 for PACE to the
amount due. This resulted in a
drop of contributions to
$7,500 for first semester of
1972-73.
Pointing to cutbacks in
federal aid to students, Ritchie
said, PACE is needed more
now than two years ago.
He said that last year 100 to
120 students were assisted by
an average grant of $300 from
PACE. If contributions don't
pick up, only half as many
students could be helped each
year, he said.
