School of Journalism
There is a new School of
Life Sciences but little hope of
a new building to house it.
No life science building can
be expected, said John Janovy,
University of Nebraska -Lincoln
professor of zoology,
without the support of the
campus administration. He said
lack of support by members of
the administration was a major
factor in the reduction of state
financing for the new building
last March.
Last spring UNL asked for
$6 million to build the
structure and the legislature
passed an appropriation for
$4.1 million. Gov. J. J. Exon
cut the figure to $2.1 million.
Gus Lieske, director of the
Department of Administrative
Services, said the $2.1 million
is adequate until the University
can prove otherwise.
The University Board of
Regents created a School of
Life Sciences at its June 23
meeting. Lieske said, however.

the creation of the new school
does not create a need for a
new building.
$6.1 million minimum
Janovy said $6.1 million was
the minimum amount needed
for the new building and if the
university life science
departments were to be in the
upper half of the Big Eight
Conference it would take $7
million to $7.5 million.
A new facility has been
requested with high priority by
UNL each year since 1967. In
1 9 72, $100,000 was
appropriated for a study to
plan a new building. A St.
Louis architectural firm was
hired at a cost of $10,000 to
conduct the study, which
concluded that the $6 million
requested was the minimum
amount needed.
According to Janovy the
new building is desperately
needed. Each semester 4,000
students take life science
courses in the departments of
botany, microbiology and
zoology.
More than half of all medical
students, dental students,
medical technology students
and dental hygiene students
now being trained in Nebraska
receive their pre-professional
training at UNL. Every student
in the College of Agriculture
takes a year of life sciences and
some major programs require
several courses beyond that,
he said.
Bessey Hall, the main
facility in which these 4,000
students are trained in biology,
has been described by
President D.B. Varner as "one
of the worst academic facilities
I have ever seen."
The teaching program in life
sciences is divided among
Bessey Hall, Lyman Hall,
Oldfather Hall and the 501
building. Janovy said this is a
serious problem because "the
departments using the
proposed building will be one
budgetary unit with one set of
courses within the next year
and they need a single
facility."
The proposed building, if
funded at the $6 million level,
would provide a combined
basic life sciences teaching and
research program including the
present departments of botany,
microbiology and zoology,
together with biochemistry.
John Stephens, assistant to
the chancellor, said the
University is reviewing the
planned location of the life
science building. He said
possible locations for the new
building would be where
Bessey Hall and Lyman Hall
now stand, if additional money
is appropriated.
Record store closed,
leaves $7,500 debt
The ASUN record store is
closed, according to ASUN
president Ann Henry. Miss
Henry made the announcement
at the ASUN summer meeting.
Miss Henry said all records
have been sent back to the
distributor. The store was
$7,500 in debt, Miss Henry
said. She said ASUN would ask
the UNL administration to
help pay the debt.
Miss Henry said the record
store would need to sell
$67,000 worth of records a
year to be able to pay off its
debt. The store sold about
$20,000 worth of records the
past year, she said.
She also said the creditors
would not wait for the money.
Terry Braye, the manager of
the store, said the decision to
close the store was made by
Miss Henry. He said the
problem with the store was
that it couldn't advertise
enough because of the low
profit margin.
